China's Invisible Majority: Rural Devlopment

We at the World Salon recently hosted an engaging public podcast recording focused on critical issues shaping China's development trajectory. For this session, we had the privilege of featuring renowned economist Professor Scott Rozelle from Stanford University as our distinguished guest.

Moderated by our president Charlie Du, the discussion delved into several salient topics – education reforms in China, the aging population's impact, rural-urban inequality, and overlooked challenges highlighted in Professor Rozelle's book "The Invisible China."

Leveraging over 30 years of groundbreaking research on Chinese economic policies and rural development, Professor Rozelle provided perceptive analysis on improving rural education, addressing demographic pressures, and tackling systemic inequality issues.

When asked about ongoing education reforms, Professor Rozelle stressed enhancing vocational skills training and promoting equity. On China's aging trends, he drew insightful comparisons between China's approach versus strategies adopted in the U.S. and other nations. The professor also offered revelations from his book on the stark rural-urban divide and its multifaceted implications.

Our participants found the session highly illuminating. As one member commented, "It was an incisive look at the intricate forces shaping China's future trajectory." Podcast recordings will be available on our website for those interested in exploring the pressing challenges impacting China's aspirations of balanced and shared prosperity.
